Arctic Son (with Autographed Bookplate)
George, Jean Craighead

Free bookplate autographed by Wendell Minor with purchase.

In the Arctic, the Eskimo people welcome all children. If a baby is not Eskimo, it makes no difference to these loving people, who give the baby an Eskimo name. When Luke is born, he is given the Eskimo name Kupaaq.

Eskimo life has adjusted to the long summer day and the long winter night, the severe cold, and the arrival and departure of wildlife. Kupaaq's life is, in many ways, very different from the life of the average child in the lower forty-eight states, but in many ways his is also a universal experience shared by all children.

Jean Craighead George and Wendell Minor flew to Barrow, Alaska to research Arctic Son. There they traveled by dog sled far out on the Arctic sea ice, picnicked on frozen sandwiches, and climbed blue pressure ridges in temperatures well below zero. They also visited Aalak, an Inupiat village leader, who gave the name Kupaaq to Luke, Jean's Arctic-loving grandson.

Minor Book Plate & Yankee Doodle America - Hardcover
Wendell Minor

If you traveled the roads of colonial America, colorful hand-painted signs would greet you when you came across an inn or tavern, and inside, folks would be gathered to eagerly share the news of the day.Wendell Minor invites us on just such a journey through America in the days of its struggle for independence. Each striking illustration, painted on hand-carved replicas of these signs, introduces readers to the people, places and events that gave birth to our nation. Beginning with the Stamp Act that angered the patriots and inspired the "Sons of Liberty" to protest, readers meet George Washington (who gave his farewell speech to his soldiers at Fraunces Tavern), Thomas Jefferson (who penned the first draft of the Declaration of Independence at a Philadelphia tavern) and other historical figures, and learn about the documents and battles that keep the fight for freedom alive.
