Art of Eric Carle
Carle, Eric

First published in 1996, this retrospective has been updated and re-releaased in this beautiful new edition. Find a new essay penned by Alexandra Kennedy, the executive director of The Eric Carle Museum titled "Building the Dream: The Founding of The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art." Another new section, written by founding director H. Nichols B. Clark, discusses the abstract experiments Eric Carle his "Art Art."

Carle is one of the most beloved illustrators of children's books. This retrospective is more than just an appreciation of his art, however. The book also contains an insightful autobiography illustrated with personal photographs, an anecdotal essay by his longtime editor, a photographic essay on how Carle creates his collages, and writings by Carle and his colleagues. Still, it is the artwork in the oversize volume that seizes the imagination. More than 60 of his full-color collage pictures are handsomely reproduced and serve as a statement of Carle's impressive talent.

Eric Carle Angels: An Homage to Paul Klee

While Eric Carle has enjoyed enormous success with his books for young readers, he has also derived unparalleled satisfaction from his independent artwork. This has proven particularly true late in his career when, at the age of 87, he embarked on a series of cardboard and found-object collages depicting angels. Carle dedicated these abstract assemblages to the artist Paul Klee, who created over 70 drawings and painting of angels during his lifetime. "Klee and his angels have become my strange and mysterious passion," says Carle. "Several years ago I began to feel the need to honor Klee's angels in visual form, not in his nor in my style. I have created a series of homages to his angels."

This 31 page softcover book includes full color photographs of Carle and his cardboard collage angel tributes as well as an essay by  H. Nichols B. Clar, Founding Director and Chief Curator Emeritus of The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art.
